Review: Babajani

Opened for nearly two months now, here’s everything you need to know about Notting Hill’s new Mesopotamian deli.

Where to find them:

322a Portobello Rd, London W10 5RU

I got off at Ladbroke Grove and it was about a 10min walk

What they’re about:

If you’re looking for homecooking outside of home then this is the place for you. Inspired and named after their grandpa Babajani, the story behind their conception is clear and endearing and the service is wonderful. Of course with any new cafe and especially one with a heavy focus on hand making everything they sell,  it won’t be a fast food joint but if you’re looking for somewhere in London to try Mesopotamian food then this is the one…and maybe only.

What to order:

  • Zatar Chicken is unreal and perfectly flavoured
  • Babajani bowl is pleasing on the eye and they also use a special ingredient (I won’t divulge too much but you’ll like it and it’s hard to come by)
  • If you’re vegetarian I would suggest the Hekka Eggs, similar to your typical Shakshouka but spiced differently and delicious with extra aubergine.

The Verdict:

What really impressed me with this particular cafe restaurant is the passion that went into every dish they made and how they love to share their enthusiasm for cooking and different flavours with the customers. The food was amazing and well flavoured and also wasn’t too heavy for anyone like me trying to eat a little better. As one of the owners, Ghi is vegan, they’ve made the menu easily adaptable to those trying or living the vegan life without cutting out the meat lovers! There’s also a fantastic selection of homemade cakes and sweet treats which are both different and delicious. I definitely predict great things for this cafe and a lot of happy customers.
